What Is a Beard Hair Transplant?

Beard transplants are a way to give your facial hair the boost it needs through a quick, minimally invasive procedure. In a hair transplant, hair is taken from another donor area and transferred to the treatment area. This process is known as follicular unit extraction (FUE). While this procedure is mainly done for head hair, it can be done anywhere hair grows.

Benefits of a Beard Transplant With ARTAS® Technology

Our team at Berman Skin Institute are experts in ARTAS® hair transplants. This innovative technique uses robotic technology to accurately place hair grafts for a smoother procedure and more natural-looking results. Additionally, ARTAS provides:

  • No linear scarring: The incision and sutures can leave scarring after healing in a traditional hair transplant. With ARTAS technology, no deep incisions are made, leaving the back of your head free to wear whatever hairstyle you wish to match your new, full beard.
  • Faster healing: ARTAS uses laser technology to create more precise graft harvesting and accurate placement, resulting in faster healing times. This also means you can experience the benefits of your hair transplant much quicker than traditional hair transplant methods.
  • Permanent results: Instead of trying hair growth products with multiple applications and little to no results, a beard transplant can be a one-and-done procedure. This investment will pay off as you experience natural-looking results that last a lifetime.
  • Increased confidence: In the end, having a full beard can give you a healthy dose of self-esteem and confidence in your appearance — especially if you have been battling hair loss for years.

What to Expect From a Beard Transplant Procedure

Beard transplant procedures are minimally invasive and completed through a series of steps. Here is a general look at the beard transplant process:

  1. Trim and anesthetize: The hair in the donor area that will be transplanted is trimmed to make the transition smooth. This same area is then injected with a numbing agent.
  2. Removal: The hair follicles from the donor area — usually the back of the head — are removed, and the incision is sutured for healing.
  3. Combing: The natural hair in the donor area is combed over the sutures to ensure they are covered and hidden for cosmetic purposes while they heal.
  4. Tissue trim: The donor area tissue is trimmed using microscopes to prep the follicles for implantation.
  5. Graft implantation: The patient will receive a local anesthetic in the area of the face where the balding is present. The grafts will then be placed in an irregular pattern, shaping the beard restoration as the patient and doctor discussed before the procedure.

The beard hair transplant process can take a few hours from start to finish. The exact time of your procedure can vary depending on the size of the treatment area.

Beard Transplant Recovery Time

You only need a day at home to recover from a beard transplant. After 10 days, the skin grafts should heal and look normal. You will be able to trim and shave as usual.

To ensure your beard transplant heals well, we recommend avoiding the following for at least a month:

  • Swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms: The new hair follicles for your beard can be sensitive, and chlorine can be damaging as the follicles try to heal.
  • Direct sunlight: Stay away from direct sunlight as the risk of sunburn can cause complications and inhibit healing.
  • Physical activity: Excessive sweating and higher blood pressure from strenuous physical activity can cause the treatment areas to bleed and become infected.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Beard Transplant?

You might be a good candidate for a beard transplant if you are experiencing facial hair loss. This can be due to alopecia or genetics. You might also want a beard transplant simply to give yourself a fuller beard, mustache or sideburns.

It also helps to have healthy hair follicles in the back of your head. This area is one of the last to bald and is usually where doctors pull a hair graft for beard transplants.
